What Pain Can Do: A Closer Look at Drug Addiction By an Emotionally Wounded Soul

During the past year or so, I’ve become almost obsessed with drug and alcohol addiction. TV shows like Intervention, books about addiction, and YouTube videos from recovered addicts telling their stories about sobriety (check out Jessica Kent, she is one my favorites) have really caught my attention lately. I can immerse in it all for hours on end.

At first, I had no idea why.

When I was growing up, if you were to ask me how I felt about drug addicts and alcoholics that live in their parent’s basements without a job, emaciated, missing teeth, and emotionally unstable, I would have shrugged and said “That’s their own fault. Why did they put themselves in that position in the first place?” Now, it’s a whole different story. Why? Well, because I am at a point in my life where I could very easily find myself in the same boat.

I have never done drugs in my life and don’t drink alcohol, so my sudden fixation on the subject baffled me. But there was one book about substance abuse recovery from the point of view of a former heroin addict that I read a little over a year ago which left a big impression on me.
